The Bible Study Fellowship was established on 23rd June 1987 by the Venerable S. B. Akinola, the first indigenous Vicar of Our Saviour’s Church. The fellowship was created in order to fill the need of parishioners who wanted more than the sermon preached at Sunday service. They desired to study and reflect upon the word of God and from this desire, the fellowship was born.
Vision Of The Fellowship
In the beginning, the Bible study fellowship was geared towards a select number of people; those who wished to study and immerse themselves in the word of God outside of the Sunday service. It was seen as a group or fellowship for a handful of people. Today, it is the vision of Our Saviour’s Church that ALL parishioners will become members of the fellowship as the word of God is every Christian’s anchor. “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God” Romans 10:17.
Mission And Theme Of The Fellowship
The mission of the fellowship is to bring the word of God closer to all believers. Our aim is for believers to study the word of God, understand it and meditate upon it and order their lives by it. It is our wish that believers will be able to have a word for any situation that confronts them in life. We wish for everyone to take comfort and delight in the word of God. Our theme for the year 2010 was “life of the transformed”. This theme ensured that through the word of God, our lives have an appreciable transformation which will be visible and obvious to the world. This year, we are concentrating on the home and our responsibilities to our nation especially on this election year. We shall be guided by Romans, 1st and 2nd Corinthians with the theme: THAT GOD’S RIGHTEOUSNESS SHALL BE REVEALED IN US.
Administration of the Fellowship
The Bible Study fellowship meets every Friday and is divided into two sessions:-
1 6pm till 8pm
The session is very interactive in that we not only study a particular portion of the bible but ask questions and make verbal contributions. We close the session with a reflection for the week, a memory verse and prayer. We also take an offering. On the last Friday of every month, there is no study as the church holds its monthly vigil.
Activities of the Fellowship
One of our main activities for the year is the Bible Study quiz. This is held two times every year and involves participation from all ministries of the church. Two members from each ministry are formed into teams and are asked questions from the Bible, on which they are scored. The team which amasses the most points at the end of the competition wins the bible study trophy donated by Dr. Samuel Akinluyi in the year 2000. We also have an end of year thanksgiving, which is followed by a small reception in the church premises. The quiz days for the year 2012 are as itemized on page 38.
Leadership of the Fellowship
The fellowship is manned by a committee consisting among others, of a Chairman, Vice Chairman and a Secretary and their contact details are as follows:-
